Upton v the Doncaster Toll Bar at Doncaster Sat 20th September Yorks Cup 2nd Round
Thanks to Martyn Ward for the Report Below
Although disappointed to concede 4 tries throughout the game upton clinically demolished a Toll Bar outfit a couple of divisions below theirs with a competent display
From the kick off returning Mark Tepper set off from his own posts, rounded several defenders making half a pitch gain before releasing Steve Froggett who was just hauled down. A stong defensive platform from Dave Dunwell and the hardworking Jon Tracy set the scene for Upton allowing the backs to move the ball wide to Froggett who showed his pace and strength to bulldoze 4 defenders out of the way and then supllying the supporting Ross Johnson the inside pass which he duly converted into a try c Beal 0-6.
An uncharacteristic mistake by Upton gave Toll Bar position and possession which they took advantage of to beat a weak Lynch tackle to score 6-4
Mistakes then littered the next 20 minutes before Froggett again took matters in to his own hands as the
Subs Martin Hargreaves and Ben Spencer then came on and made an immediate impact. Ross Johnson cleverly chipping the Toll bar defence, his pace did the rest as he notched his second try 4-18 beal again adding the points
Johnson did blot his copybook though as he missed a tackle to allow the home side to get their second try 18-8
Half Time
Johnson was quick to make amends though as Toll bar pressed in the openings of the 2nd stanza as he picked up from a scrum and powered over from 15m. Beal intercepted on his own line but was caught just short of getting his hat trick despite the urgings of a large Upton contingent.
Upton retained their discipline despite a glut of high and cheap shots as the home team tried to unsettle th rhythmn of the visitors.
Upton hit back with the best possible answer though as Dave Dunwell battered through for a score 24-8
Jon MacDermott made the half break for Beal to kick for the rampaging Froggett to gather and romp in for his 2nd to take the game well beyond Toll bar 8-30
Froggett adding his 3rd with a seemingly unstoppable example of strength, pace and power as he shoved away defender after defender to register his 4th 36 – 8 from 50 m out
Froggett was in the zone as he repeated the efoort for his 4th albeit from 20m this time 42-8
Toll Bar hit back with a quick try before Upton finished their scoring with a classic as good passing Johnson supplying the last pass for Alan Thomson a stroll in Beal was unlucky not to complete a 100% record as he hit the post from the corner
As Upton took their foot off the pedal Toll Bar nipped in for another consolation try to give a final score of Doncaster Toll Bar 18 Upton 46
Man of the match was Steve Froggett but there were some good performances from Johnson, Beal and Dunwell
Upton will visit Batley in the 3rd Round of the Yorkshire Cup on Saturday 4th October
Next week Upton return to League duties as they entertain Batley at Quarry Lane kick off 2.30
