The Beggining of Upton A.R.L.F.C.
The following is taken word for word from a pressing cutting of 1980
Upton Amateur Rugby League Football Club was formed quite by chance
For one Sunday during the 1978/79 season there was talk about sport in the Harewood and Upton Recreation Club when someone suddenly said "What about rugby?"
As there had not been a rugby club in the village for many years many people felt one could not be formed. Nevertheless, they decided to put a notice on the club board asking for players and volunteers.
In no time there were enought names on the list to make the idea worthwhile and since then the club has never looked back
A club committee was set up and training begain in the local church hall. A set of rugby posts were donated by the Frickley Colliery manager and the club was ready to go.
After
a number of hit and miss freindlies the club entered and won the South Yorkshire sevens and were accepted into Division Four of the West Yorkshire League
An impressive run in the League brought Upton 13 wins from 14 games scoring 383 points with 118 againtst. They went on to the top four play-off beating Woolpack All Blacks 14-6
Although they had gained promotion to Division Three, where they are doing well this season, Upton did not have a good run in the cups.
They were beaten 14-11 in the John Players Sevens by Queensbury. 16-13 in the Doncaster Cup by Barnsley and 22-16 in the BARLA Cup
However they did reach the semi-finals of the Doncaster continuation Cup and also had a superb 106-0 wing over Barnsley "A" in the West Yorkshire Cup first round.
Also among last season's efforts were their Milton Keynes Development Sevens tiumph and a match between the club and Upton Brookside WMC which raised 55 pounds for the Upton old Folks Treat Fund
During the close season the club were asked to stage a sevens competion with the district festival committee. The competition was such a success that it is to become an annual event The popularity of the club and teams is shown by the gates of 200 to 300 supporters at home games. While a 53-seater coach and a dozen cars or so always attend away games. There is also a strong family atmosphere within the club with fathers, mothers, brothes and wives.
There are centres Les and Kelly Bainbridge, Dave and Ken Froggett (scrum haf and second row) while their faterh Will is the club president Ken Spencer is the club treasurere, his tow sons, Steve and Alan play in the prop positions while his wife, Barbara makes the refreshments. Phil Balshaw's wife, Susan washes and repairs the kit Upton have been lucky in getting sponsorshiop from Mr F Pearce, Managing Director of Burdins Motors of Castleford, while Mr T Askew of Askew's Plant Hire, Upton has promised help in the near future. Scouts from professional clubs Featherstone Rovers, Castleford and Doncaster have all visited the Upton club to look at the players especially Steve Spencer and loose forward Alan Balmforth Apart from this Les and Kelly Bainbridge, Dave and Ken Froggatt, Tony Randerson and Steve Spencer have all represented the district side
The game is becoming so populat in Upton that the club now have an under 15 side and the Open age lads are in the process of running a raffle to kith them out The under 15 tema had a good 1979/80 seson , losing in the top four play-off of their small league, their best performance came in the 110-0 victory over Chesterfield
